A sales funnel sounds technical, but it's just a path: someone discovers you, gets something useful for free, hears from you over a few days, and is then invited to buy. You can build that whole path today without paying for software. This guide shows you how, step by step, using a free Systeme.io account and an AI writing assistant.
What a sales funnel actually is
Most visitors won't buy the first time they find you. A funnel solves that by collecting their email address in exchange for something valuable (a lead magnet), then following up automatically. Instead of hoping people come back, you invite them back.
The 4 parts of a beginner funnel
- Traffic — where people find you: YouTube videos, Shorts, Reels, blog posts or community posts.
- Opt-in page (also called a squeeze page) — one page, one promise, one form: "Get the free checklist."
- Thank-you page — delivers the freebie and suggests a next step.
- Email sequence — 5–7 emails over one to two weeks that teach, build trust and present an offer.
That's it. Upsells, webinars and order bumps can come later.
The $0 tool stack
- Funnel + email + hosting: Systeme.io free plan. According to its pricing page it includes up to 2,000 contacts, 3 sales funnels, unlimited email sends, 1 blog, 1 course and 1 custom domain, with no credit card required.
- Writing: any AI assistant (ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini — free tiers are enough to start).
- Lead magnet design: Canva's free plan or Google Docs exported to PDF.
- Traffic: YouTube and Shorts, a free blog, or relevant communities.
Only one of these needs to hold your contacts and send your emails, which is why an all-in-one tool keeps things simple.

Step 1 — Choose one audience and one problem
"People who want to make money online" is too broad. "Freelance designers who want their first 3 clients from LinkedIn" is specific enough that your free guide can be genuinely useful.
Step 2 — Create a lead magnet that solves a small problem fast
Checklists, templates, swipe files and short 5–7 day plans work well because people can use them immediately. Aim for something that can be consumed in under 20 minutes.
Step 3 — Create the funnel
- In Systeme.io, go to Funnels → Create and choose the goal for building an audience / collecting emails.
- Pick a squeeze-page template and edit the headline, bullets and button. Keep only first name and email in the form.
- Edit the thank-you page: add a download button for your PDF and one clear next step.
Step 4 — Write and automate the email sequence
- Go to Emails → Campaigns, create a campaign and add your emails with delays (e.g. day 0, 1, 3, 5, 7, 10, 14).
- On the squeeze page step, add an automation rule: when someone subscribes through the form, subscribe them to the campaign (and optionally add a tag).
Step 5 — Test it end to end
Subscribe with a personal email, confirm the guide arrives, check the thank-you page, and click every link. Then test on your phone.
Step 6 — Send traffic
Publish one helpful piece of content per day for a month, each ending with a pointer to your free guide. Consistency matters more than perfect production.

Opt-in page: "Write a headline, 3 benefit bullets and a button label for a free [lead magnet] that helps [audience] achieve [result] in [timeframe]. Plain language, no hype, no income claims."
Lead magnet outline: "Outline a 7-step checklist that helps [audience] [result]. Each step: one action, why it matters, and a 10-minute version."
Emails: "Write email #[n] of a 7-email welcome sequence for people who downloaded [lead magnet]. Goal of this email: [goal]. Under 200 words, friendly, one link, honest."
Always edit the output: add your own examples and remove anything you can't back up.
Beginner mistakes to avoid
- Building for weeks before getting any traffic. Launch a simple version, then improve.
- Asking for too much in the form. Name and email are enough.
- Selling in every email. Teach first; make the offer clear but not constant.
- Making claims you can't prove. Avoid income promises and invented testimonials — they hurt trust and can break advertising rules.
- Skipping the test. A broken form loses every lead it touches.
Bottom line
A free funnel needs four things: traffic, an opt-in page, a thank-you page and an email sequence. You can build all four on Systeme.io's free plan in a weekend, and upgrade only when your list outgrows it.
